Updates, long overdue

Nearly a year ago, I found myself stressing over the wording of the 50 word and 500 word responses to college apps all the while procrastinating everything else and the stress-causing babbling. A little more than a year ago, I finished my last post on this uneventful site, concluding Governor’s School and opening my senior year.

And so, the last year of realizations, failed attempts at the manifestation of dreams long ingrained in my definition of success, have gifted some regret, contempt, apathy, (perhaps) wisdom and appreciation. This is then duly titled “Updates, long overdue” as, with strong intention, I had planned on keeping active, and just as I have library books 5 years overdue hiding underneath my bed, I acknowledge that, for myself and others, it may do good to write and rewrite and eventually share the thoughts and happenings of the year past into the ever-closing future.

Applying

Around this time last year, as I repeat, I had it ALL figured out. Hours of research on the all-knowledgeable College Confidential, several phones calls to peers whose acceptances sparked interest and a whole lot of jealousy, and nightly sessions of Instagram stalking universities and their admits led me to believe Stanford would be the perfect fit. More than perfect, really. Being one of six, and the oldest, to a single mother, would leave me with near no debt, I’d spend the next four years living gloriously in Cali’s sunshine and on Stanford’s amenities, including those two large pools and fitness center. I’d become a football game attendee, already having considered college football on the West Coast acceptable whereas high school football in my small Appalachian town was not. I researched potential classes and read ratings of professors. To say the least, I became attached, regardless of how the odds were not in my favor. Continue reading “Updates, long overdue”

Reflecting on GSE + First Month of Senior Year

Reflection

Well that passed quickly.

5.5 weeks of friends, middle school-esque dances, and academic immersion in a subject that I am passionate about. All of it was more blissful and rewarding than I could have hoped for.

GSE!!(?)

I’m at Governor’s School!! For French! And it’s pretty cool! Wooo

??

What is the North Carolina Governor’s School??? Well, it is a 5.5 week summer program, open to rising 11th and 12th graders (depends on the subject area), for ‘gifted students’ whom have demonstrated interest in the pursuit of knowledge, or excellence, in a particular subject. The North Carolina Governor’s School is the longest running and oldest in the nation, founded in 1963 by the then-governor of North Carolina as a response to the Cold War.

On the East campus (there are two campuses), students represent the subjects of Natural Science, French, Mathematics, English, Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Social Science, Dance, Theater, and Visual Art. Selected from a pool of over 1600 applicants from around the state, 336 of us make up the community of GSE, and roughly the same number provide and build the community of the lawless West campus. Most subjects are represented at both campuses, though there are some differences in music and foreign language. French, for example, is unique to East while Spanish is the only ‘foreign’ language at West.

In short, Governor’s School is a month-long academic party in which we, the students, expand upon previous knowledge of life and our respective subject, network/make friends, and discover the joys of dorm living and college dining. Continue reading “GSE!!(?)”

Hello from the other side of junior year

It’s been a while. I’m not who I was before. Junior year has taken its toll on my mental capacity and, while I have been journaling to keep up with assignments and immediate thoughts, writing ‘just for fun’ has not been a priority.

UPDATES

I really do hope to write more this summer, both for personal growth and enjoyment and for this blog. I will be attending the North Carolina Governor’s School for French for five and a half weeks and I at least intend to post about the experience.

Went to the State Championships in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track this past year! Looking forward (haha kinda) to summer training and finding a way to stay motivated during my time at Governor’s School – hopefully journaling and this space will help??

I’m beginning to think about college applications (!!!) which has been both exciting and a bit terrifying. I’m nervous about the entire process and have started some very melodramatic essay drafts. We shall see how they progress over the summer, or if I’ll  succumb to procrastination.

French specific updates, outside of the whole Governor’s School thing: I took the AP exam on May 15 (Sébastien needs to get his crap together and maybe go to yoga); everyone in French 2, 4, and AP tested their skills with Le Grand Concours, or the National French Exam – the scores of which were recently released via the French Honor Society induction ceremony, during which I found out that I earned a ‘silver’ award for my performance and am ranked 10th in the nation in my particular division on the exam!; finally, I was elected French club president and with that new power, I hope to establish a travel scholarship to help other students pursue language education outside of the traditional classroom setting. On verra qu’est-ce qui se passera avec ce but.

xx

Things to do, alone

#alonetime is important. Also, it was not supposed to be the topic of this post but whatever (my wifi was spotty and didn’t save my progress on a LEMON TART recipe so stay posted for that ;)). So I decided to try this blog challenge thing that I found in the wonderful idea library of Pinterest. Yay!

The prompt was “weird things you do while you’re alone” but I’m alone a lot and I find myself pretty normal. So I’ll include “weird” things I do, but really, it’s a list of suggestions for EVERYONE.

Things I Do While Alone/Ideas for People Wanting to Do Something By Themselves

Let’s get started

  • Color. In a coloring book. Very therapeutic
  • READ. This can also boost standardized test scores, expand your vocabulary, help you sounds pretentious, and English teachers will love you.
  • Cook/bake. Also very therapeutic and helps you expand your cooking repertoire. More importantly, food.
  • Cry. Sometimes you reflect on life and cry. Sometimes you just need to cry. Helps get bottled up emotions OUT.
  • Take a shower. Sing in the shower. Great for reflection, vocal work, and characterization (I have memorized many a script for drama in the shower).
  • Clean. Cleaning is important for health reasons, both mental and physical. Just cleaning your room can help you feel refreshed and rest to tackle something else.
  • Exercise. Normally, I run or do planks but whatever exercise is fine. Exercising by yourself makes you focus on your body and how you’re feeling, rather than competing with a friend/friends. Make sure you fuel properly before and afterwards and drink lots of water! 🙂
  • Journal/scrapbook. I find myself doing this more and more. In fact, right now I have three journals. Journaling will help you process thoughts and emotions, plus they’re fun to read later on! Scrapbooking takes a long time and are best for photos, immortalizing trips, and holding artifacts of your past.
  • Go through your wardrobe. Get rid of items you haven’t worn in the past year, that have bad memories associated with them, or that you just don’t like. Then donate to a thrift store, homeless shelter, or consign. This is an opportunity to detox, create room for future purchases, and possibly, earn some cash.
  • Listen to some music. Find some new music. Ya know, you can impress many a person with a diverse and inclusive music taste.
  • Practice a foreign language. You can use an app like Duolingo, but honestly, I practice coming up with questions, writing, and pronunciation without an app. It’s just something I do when I’m bored or running. Learning a second (or third, fourth, etc) language is invaluable and pretty fun. Do it.
  • Sleep. You need time to recover from life, so take an early night or take a nap. Both are highly beneficial and recommended by me.

I hope this list was a little helpful 🙂
